The Opal Street (Emerald) Water Treatment Plant (WTP) uses a conventional treatment process with rapid gravity media filters. There are four filters with two cells in each filter. The oldest filters were built prior to 1977 and the newest filters in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The filters currently contain what is presumed to be a fine filter sand. The oldest filters had their filter media replaced in the 1990s and the newest filters are likely to contain the original filter media. An investigation of the filters was conducted by City Water Technology (CWT) in 2015 and the resulting report is contained in Annexure Part L – Other Documents.
Central Highland Regional Council (CHRC) are seeking to improve filter performance with regards to filter run times and filtered water quality by replacing the existing mono media (sand) with dual media (coal and sand). The purpose of this contract is to design and construct the replacement filter media, underdrains and nozzles in all cells of all filters.
