This development comprises the removal of the existing Poletti Road bridge over Saltwater Creek with a new, single span concrete deck bridge. The abutments of the new bridge and pier locations have been designed to key into the natural bank and bed surface of Saltwater Creek without intrusion into the creek flow, and will provide improved habitat connectivity with the removal of the instream old bridge piers.
The bridge replacement over Saltwater Creek is within a public road reserve (Poletti Road) managed by Douglas Shire Council that provides the only road access tor residences and properties.
The project is a direct replacement of the existing bridge on Poletti Road over Saltwater Creek on the same alignment as the existing bridge. There are no alternative viable routes that do not require waterway barrier works.
Provision has been made in the design of the temporary sidetrack to allow fish passage. The sidetrack includes 7 culverts of a minimum 750mm diameter will enable passage for all fish guilds known to utilise the creek.
The contractor will be responsible for the full removal of the sidetrack and all sediment control devices. The bed of Saltwater Creek will be formed to the pre-construction state included reinstatement of any removed bed material (if undertaken). No structures will remain in the water post construction and full fish movement will be reinstated.
A water quality monitoring program will be established during the construction period to ensure that water quality objectives for the maintenance of habitat conditions conducive to sustaining the health and condition of fisheries resources.
